About Me

”Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”     Teddy Roosevelt

This is how I feel about teaching.  I have taught for 21 years and there is no place I’d rather be than in my classroom.

(Well, summer vacation in Hawaii would be nice!)

I have three beautiful, grown daughters, a wonderful husband, and two puppies.  This past July Rudee celebrated 13 years and Rowan 13 months.  In my free time I enjoy reading and watching old movies.  I love teaching and will continue to teach until I win the lottery.

Mission For The Class

To prepare each student in a positive environment to be responsible, successful, and ready for future challenges.

I believe as a team (teacher, parent, student) we will provide a positive environment, clear communication, mutually agreed-on guidelines, clear routines, and plenty of support for success.  I have high standards for my students.  I believe we should all reach for the moon.  However, if we miss the moon and land on a star, we still find success.

Homework is useful in reinforcing skills and materials learned in class. It prepares students for upcoming topics, teaches responsibility, and helps develop positive study skills.

Homework is the students’ responsibility.  Fourth and fifth grade students will have homework every evening.  They will be required to read daily for 20 minutes and complete a language arts and math assignment, each taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes.  There will also be science or social studies homework several times a week.  I would like all parents to initial their child’s homework planner every night.  This means that the parents read the planner and saw the completed work.  Remember, students are responsible for their homework.

Your child will follow his/her general education schedule.  The only difference is I will be the teacher for all or part of Language Arts (reading, grammar, spelling, writing) and/or math.  I will follow grade level curriculum as close as possible to insure that your child will be prepared for his/her grade level and SOL assessments.

What are the class rules?

1.      Respect others.  Be kind with your words and actions.

2.      Follow directions in a timely manner.

3.      Work quietly.  Do not disturb others who are working.

4.      Listen carefully.

5.      Respect school and personal property.

6.      Work and play safely.

7.      THINK!  LEARN!

If a student breaks a rule?

·        1st time- Warning

·        2nd time- Write your name in the Behavior Log.  Time out for ten minutes.

·        3rd time- Think sheet (to be signed by parent and returned) and parent is called.

·        4th time- Conference is scheduled with parent(s), student, and teacher(s).

·        Severe disruptions- Student is sent immediately to the office and/or home.

What are Tuesday Papers?

On Tuesdays you will receive a large envelope from the homeroom general education teacher with important papers from the office, PTA, and teachers.  The homeroom teacher will also include graded papers from her classroom.

I will also send home your child’s work completed the previous week with a Weekly Progress Report stapled on top of their work.  Please review the work, sign my Weekly Progress Report, and have your child return the whole packet to me the next day.

Who is our Teaching Assistant?

Mrs. Harrell is our teacher assistant.  She works with Mrs. Mason and Mrs. VanderGiessen.

What are the Expectations for my class?

I want all children to master new skills; improve their academic skills; demonstrate good character skills such as responsibility, respect, diligence, and honesty; find a new level of confidence and self-esteem; achieve success; and have a life-long love and thirst for knowledge.

What should I expect when my child is absent?

All students are responsible for making up class work and homework when they are absent.  Generally I give students 2 – 4 days to make up their work, depending on how many days they were absent.  Students should bring their homework to school the day they return.

Projects and Book reports:

Your child will be responsible for a monthly book report.  There will also be some science and social studies projects throughout the year.  Parents and students will be given ample notice and information about all book reports, projects, and tests.  Projects, due dates, and upcoming tests will always be written in the students’ planner so please read and initial the planners every night.
